The Art and Craft of Linen Making
A difficult-to-perfect fabric, fine linen is the product of centuries of learning, innovation and invention. The story of linen is a journey back in time.
Our Linen Source – The temperate plains of France and Belgium have the ideal climate for growing flax that has flawless characteristics. Europe has exported the crème de la crème of linen across the world for centuries.
Famous for their softness and durability, European flax are far more glossy and resilient as compared to fibres acquired from anywhere else in the world.
Raw European flax is hand collected into bunches and fed into mechanical contraption for hackling to untangle the bundles of flax which is then stripped, stretched, cleaned and eventually twined into a coarse rope.
The coarse rope is further stretched and wound into finer strands of linen fibres in roving machines, ceaselessly spinning into more uniform threads under the supervision of skilled craftsmen.
Savio Splicing Auto Winder machines from Italy take the "roved" fibres and spin it into fine yarn mounted on a spool.
The spools of linen are bleached and dyed in a range of colours palettes from neutrals to vibrant tones.
Before each spool moves on, it is passed through quality assurance to check every inch of yarn for defects in evenness, strength and elongation.
Expert weavers then employ imported machinery from Switzerland to turn endless specification sheets into the finest linen. This requires as much technical know-how as creativity, and under the expert hands of these craftsmen, the unique texture and feel of the fabric takes shape. This process is endlessly customizable and can be adapted to make any kind of pattern and color combination.
Every yard of the fabric is washed, boiled, starched, ironed, and processed in a variety of ways to make the final superior quality finished fabric.
The fabric is scrutinized under the magnifying glass of the quality assurance experts. Even a single defect at this stage results in the entire batch being discarded.
The finished fabric is packed, sealed and distributed to showrooms and retailers all over India, so it’s still new when you put your hands to it.
